How to play Holi safely if you have allergies and asthma?

Holi is so much about colours, the very thing that can trigger problems for those suffering from asthma. The seasonal change too can trigger respiratory allergies.

Be aware of pollen:

People who have asthma and respiratory allergies are more susceptible to difficulties and attacks during Holi. This is both because of the weather and Holi as a festival. Holi happens during the harvest season, and at a time when winter is giving way to summer, so many trees and plants release pollen. This results in allergies, sneezing, wheezing and asthma attacks, which peak during March. We advise asthmatics to stay indoors as much as possible during the month. Pollen levels usually peak early mornings and evenings, and this time, in particular, one should avoid outdoor activity. If they are going outside, then they should cover their nose and mouth with a mask or moist cloth, and they must carry their inhalers to prevent a full-blown asthma attack.

Respiratory concerns:

The inhalation of airborne particles from dry Holi colours poses a significant risk, particularly for individuals with underlying respiratory conditions such as asthma or allergies. These fine particles can trigger respiratory distress, increasing existing symptoms and dampening the celebratory spirit. Wear a well-fitting mask to reduce inhaling colored powders.

As a precaution, we advise patients to carry their inhalers when playing Holi and try to avoid inhaling the colour directly as much as possible.

Dangers of using chemical laden Holi colours:

Certain dyes, synthetic additives, heavy metals  and chemicals used in some colors can cause allergic skin reactions like contact dermatitis, with symptoms like redness, itching, irritation, and burning.

Protecting your vision:

As people engage in the spirited exchange of colours, it's essential to safeguard our eyes from potential harm. Chemical-laden colours, when splashed or smeared near the eyes, can cause irritation, redness, and even corneal damage. Investing in sunglasses or protective eyewear serves as a simple yet effective measure to shield our vision from harm, ensuring a clear outlook on the festivities ahead.

Guarding against chemical poisoning:

Beyond external exposure, the toxic substances present in chemical colours can permeate through the skin, leading to chemical poisoning. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and organ damage may manifest in severe cases, underscoring the importance of awareness and vigilance when selecting colours for Holi celebrations. Choosing colours labelled as safe and non-toxic and exercising caution during application can help minimize the risk of inadvertent exposure to harmful substances.

Tips to Minimize Allergy Issues During Holi:

In addition to choosing natural colours and protective eyewear, avoiding direct eye contact with colours can safeguard against ocular injuries, there are several precautionary measures that individuals can take to ensure a safe and joyous Holi celebration.

Refraining from using harsh chemicals or solvents for colour removal and employing gentle, skin-friendly cleansers can help reduce post-celebration discomfort and promote skin health. Hydrating the skin with a good moisturizer and wearing long-sleeved clothing can provide an added layer of protection against colour-induced irritations.

Consider staying indoors:

If you're worried about your asthma, it's perfectly okay to skip the outdoor celebrations. You can still enjoy the spirit of Holi with friends and family indoors.

Limit strenuous activity:

Playing Holi can be physically demanding. Take breaks often and avoid getting overheated, which can worsen asthma symptoms. If you have asthma, carry your inhaler during Holi celebrations.

Wash your skin thoroughly with clean water after playing Holi.

In case of severe allergic reactions, consult a doctor immediately.

By following these tips and being aware of the potential risks, people with allergies can still enjoy the festivities of Holi.
